Tumescent Liposuction

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty or suction-assisted lipectomy, is a cosmetic surgical operation and a very popular aesthetic body treatment in which unwanted fats from different areas of the body is being removed by a suction device.

The most popular, effective, accurate, and safe technique used is the tumescent liposuction which is an outpatient procedure and has been available since the mid-1980s.  It can safely remove unwanted fats from nearly all areas of the body.  In addition to this, it is also an effective treatment for non-cosmetic conditions like lipomas, enlarged male and female breasts, and excessive underarm sweating.

Tumescent liposuction allows dermatologic surgeons to proficiently remove superficial and deep layers of fat with little soreness, faster recovery as well as enhanced cosmetic results.  Less bruising, bleeding, and irregularities were seen. Statistics have shown no serious complications or deaths and having 1% risk of any complication.  In any event that risks and serious complications arises, death is possible, but extremely rare.

Tumescent Liposuction Cost

The cost of tumescent liposuction can vary depending in the region where it is performed, the extent of the area being treated, and the person performing the procedure.  However, it is a reasonably low cost procedure compared to other liposuction methods.  It is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by medical insurance plans.  On the other hand, most physicians offer payment plans to help their patients afford tumescent liposuction.

Side Effects & Benefits

Tumescent liposuction is extremely safe.  Although like any type of surgery, it has its risks and benefits, but it is unusual or easily resolved by the surgeons.  Skin irregularity, lumpiness, dimpling, loose skin, and infections are some of the minor complications that may occur.

Tumescent liposuction has three benefits over the other types of liposuction. One, there is considerably less blood loss because of how anesthesia is being administered. Second is less of an opportuniy to have a terible anesthesia reaction because local anesthetic is being used.  Lastly, faster recovery time because surgeons only make smaller incisions and use local anesthesia.  As a result, patients can continue their normal routines after a few days of rest.

Procedure

In tumescent liposuction, cannulas is being used and inserted in smaller openings in the skin and the fat is being removed.  Prior to removing the excess fat, a diluted solution of local anesthetic and other medications (usually epinephrine) is injected to the fatty layer of the skin which causes the tissue to become swollen and firm.  The epinephrine used causes the constriction of the blood vessels and provided a longer-lasting numbing effect.  After this procedure, the area may stay numb for 36 hours.

Recovery

Recovery time varies with how many areas are treated and with the type of activity.  Mainly, patients resume normal duties after two days of the surgery, but others may require 6-7 days to recover.  A special compression garment specifically designed for this procedure is being worn which helps the skin to contract and achieve better results.

Long Term Benefits

Results will be noticed within 10 to 30 days, however, improvement continues for up to one year.  This procedure can be repeated.  Patients may experience two to four drops in clothing size.  Fat cells are permanently removed by tumescent liposuction; hence, weight gain will not arise in the targeted areas.  But, it is essential to maintain proper diets and exercise routines in order to control weight and fat gain.
